It's that time of year again for many! We won't be picking any fresh strawberries in Wisconsin anytime soon, but they are coming.

I love to go strawberry picking and H-Man has been coming with me for years. Actually, I think he picked more than I did last year! This is a picture from last year, Spring of 2021, at one of our local "Pick-Your-Own" strawberry fields. I cannot even tell you how good the berries are when they are this fresh. They are bright, sweet, juicy, basically everything you want a berry to be.
One of the reasons H-Man loves to pick so many is because he knows we will freeze them. Frozen berries, well any fruit really, are one of H-Man's favorite snacks! As a mom, I won't complain when he goes to the freezer and grabs a bag of frozen fruit instead of a container of ice cream. (Not hating on any ice cream here, just trying to make the best choices we can. Ice cream is for special occasions!) He also loves them packed in his lunch. I've found that if you put them in a cold thermos, they stay frozen (mostly anyway) until lunchtime. Here's what they looked like when I packed them in his lunch this morning.
Pack a fork to dig them out with and you're set to go. This thermos trick will keep almost any frozen fruit in the frozen state until lunch time. We've tried every berry, peaches, melon, and grapes. Tip - if you're lucky enough to have really large berries, you might want to cut them in half before you freeze them. Otherwise, they get tricky to eat once they're frozen. We use the same type of thermos as the one listed to the bottom, right.
Here's what they look like when I pull them out of the freezer.
I don't do anything special to prep them for freezing. Most of the local berries we pick are not large enough to need to be cut, however, there are some or some regions where that might be necessary. I wash them and lay them out to dry on a kitchen towel, then I just bag them up in freezer bags. If you want to get fancy, you can freeze them on a cookie sheet first so they are individually frozen, that will keep them from freezing to each other. I prefer to let them stick together a little and use that as an excuse to get some frustrations out. Ha! Seriously, they break apart quite easily, so you don't have to worry. I'll share more soon with some berries from this year.
